"In 1973, I had a local bank foreclosing on me. The man I was working as a ranch hand for, Kelly McEntire, took me to OKC to visit with National's President at the time, Harley Custer. After visiting with Mr. Custer a good while, he advised me I owed more on my 48 cows, sorrel horse and pickup truck than they were worth. He then told me that because I was a young man and that a good man (McEntire) had brought me to him, that he was going to try me.
